Definition of terms

Primary air

This is the air which is fed to the fireplace via the fire grate. In principal this kind of air is necessary for the heat up phase. Once the heat up is finished the feed of primary air is stoped.

Secondary air

The secondary air is introduced through channels on the upper region of the combustion chamber and streams along the inspection glass. This type of air is essential for the firing of wood. It causes a post-combustion of the heating gases and therefore an emission-free firing.

Heating power

The heating power is the heating warmth, delivered in a certain time from a heat generator. It is stated in kW. The heating power must be at its minimum as high as the heating load of the building.

kWh

Thousand watt-hours = 1 kilowatt hour (kWh). This is the common unit for the indication of the energy- or warmth amount.

Heating load

The heating load is the heating power which has to be constantly conveyed to a room to continuously hold a room temperature of 21 °C.

Pellets

Pellets are pressings out of natural strand, saw dust or rest-wood. Those pellets have a bore of 6 to 8 mm and are used for the firing of special pellet boilers. Based on this fuel automatic combustion plants for the firing of wood can be realized.

Split logs

Split logs are split wood that is longer than 14 cm. Boilers and stoves normally use split logs with a length of 30 to 100 cm.

Heat exchanging device

Is a gear which is able to transfer warmth from a medium to another or equal medium without mixing the mediums. Such heat exchanging devices are common as wounded pipes or tube bundles in water reservoirs. Through the pipes warmth of the heating water is transferred to the drinking water.

Efficiency

Therewith the effectiveness of a boiler is stated (heating technology). Defines how much energy is generated respectively transformed by a boiler through the firing of a fuel.

Emission

The output of air-contaminative matters like for instance carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and so on.

Boiler effectiveness

Beside the stack loss, the radiation loss receives attention at the boiler effectiveness. The higher the boiler effectiveness the higher is the heating power.

Lambda probe

This probe measures the height of the air-surplus during the firing-process and corrects the air amount to maximize the effectiveness of the firing.

Boiler

The boiler is for the storage of heating water. These boilers are used to improve the effectiveness, the firing process and to override energy blocking times of water pumps.

Conveying systems

A conveying system automatically supplies with fuels. Those systems are often used for automatic pellet boilers.
